The 5 Things Every Successful Yard Sale Has
Walk past 10 yard sales on a Saturday and you can spot the winners from the curb. They share five things — none of them complicated, none of them expensive, all of them easy to skip when you're rushing to get the driveway set up by 7am.
1. Visible signage that points to the sale
A sign on your own mailbox doesn't count. People driving down the main road need to know where to turn. Put a sign at every intersection within a quarter-mile of your house. Big arrows. Black marker on neon poster board. Include the day and time so drivers don't pull up Thursday for your Saturday sale. Cross-streets matter more than addresses.
2. A clear, walkable layout
Cram everything onto one folding table and people will skim past. Spread your sale across the driveway with categories grouped together — kids' stuff on one table, tools on another, kitchenware on a third. Leave 4 feet between tables so two people can browse side-by-side without bumping into each other. Books, clothes, and shoes should be at chest height, not on the ground.
3. Prices on (almost) everything
Nothing kills momentum like "How much for this?" repeated 80 times. Price the things people will most likely buy. For everything else, post a sign: "Anything not priced — make me an offer." Use colored stickers if you're hosting multiple families — one color per seller — to avoid the money split argument at the end.
4. Cash and at least one digital payment option
The average shopper carries less than $10 in cash. Accept Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App and you'll close more $20+ items. Print your QR code at letter-size and tape it to the cashbox. Keep $40 in small bills for change — five $5s, a stack of $1s.
5. Real advertising before the sale
Word-of-mouth isn't enough. You need traffic the morning of, which means people knowing about your sale by Thursday or Friday. Free options that work: local Facebook groups, Nextdoor "For Sale & Free", and a free Saledar listing that emails subscribers in your ZIP. Add yard signs Friday night.
