The Night-Before Yard Sale Checklist

The hosts whose Saturdays go smoothly all share a habit: they set up Friday night. Not just "pull things out of the garage" — actually set up. Here's the full checklist.

By 6pm Friday

• Confirm the weather for the morning. If you're rescheduling, post the change to Facebook, Nextdoor, Saledar, and any group threads.
• Pull every item you're selling into one space — garage or covered porch — for setup.
• Decide where each category will live on the driveway: kids' here, kitchen here, tools here. Walk through it once.

By 8pm Friday

• Set up tables on the driveway, covered with sheets or tablecloths. Yes — overnight.
• Hang the garment rack under cover (porch or garage), clothes already on hangers.
• Stage boxes of small items behind each table so you can refill empty spots throughout the morning.
• Tape down a tarp over the most weather-sensitive items if rain is even possible.

By 10pm Friday

• Print or finalize signs: yard signs, "$1 table" signs, "Make an offer" signs, your QR codes
• Cashbox loaded with $40 starting cash (eight $5s + fifteen $1s)
• Fanny pack ready — your money apron stays with you all day
• QR codes printed at letter size for Venmo / Zelle / Cash App
• Phone charger plugged in (you'll be on your phone all morning)
• A printed list of which prices are firm (so you don't waffle in the morning)

Items pre-priced

• Anything obvious — books, kids' clothes, kitchenware
• Skip pricing items where you'd take any reasonable offer (post a "make me an offer" sign instead)
• Hero items priced confidently — buyers test you on big tickets

Outside, on the curb

• One sign at your own driveway entrance, big and clear
• The "FREE" box stocked with stuff you'd throw away anyway — pulls cars in

The night-before pep talk to yourself

• Set the alarm for 5:30am
• Lay out comfortable shoes, hat, sunscreen, water bottle, wallet, keys, phone
• Charge the Bluetooth speaker if you want background music
• Decide who's "on" for the first hour and who's making coffee

Things you'll forget if you don't think about Friday

• Bags and newspaper for buyers wrapping purchases
• A calculator at the cashbox
• A countertop or table for the cashbox, not a folding chair
• A pad and pen to write down high-ticket sales or "hold for pickup" items
• Extension cord if you're demoing electronics
• Tape for anything that needs taping last-minute

Saturday morning (so you don't forget what tonight prepared)

• 5:30am — wake, coffee, comfortable clothes
• 5:45am — uncover items, plug in outdoor lights if it's still dim
• 6:15am — yard signs go up at every intersection within ¼ mile
• 6:30am — driveway open for early birds (they're coming whether you like it or not)
• 7:00am — "official" opening; refill tables as items leave
• Throughout — replenish, restick prices, take cash inside hourly

Before bed, do one slow walk through your setup with the eyes of a buyer. Is the path clear? Are prices visible? Is the cash station obvious? Does the curb-side hero item still catch the eye?
